Senior Urban Planner

Job Summary

The senior urban planner will be part of AECOM’s Building & Places discipline and as a key member of the Urban Design and Planning team you will contribute to the development of project outcomes and coordinate the team to effectively manage the delivery, resourcing and product as agreed with the Director and clients.

Job Duties

• Assists the project manager in complex planning studies, development applications and reviews.

• Conducts research and prepares statistical reports on land use, physical, social and economic issues.

• Provides professional planning assistance to member communities on varied land use and transportation projects.

• Works in regional program areas relating to natural/water resources planning, community development, hazard mitigation, coastal zone management, and others.

• Performs field inspections to gather data relevant to the development review process and/or to verify that development projects comply with approved plans.

• Conducts meetings and presents reports and other findings to staff with advisory boards and elected officials.

• Coordinate activities of the team prepare to concept, structure and illustrative master plans for planned communities, mixed use residential and resorts, themed entertainment and residential sub-divisions.

• Participate in urban design workshops with clients and other design and specialist consultants.

• Support the Director in the marketing and procurement of urban master planning services to existing and new practice clients.

• Participate in the successful operation and management of the project team.

• Provide specific technical expertise in land use planning and work within a team of planners, urban designers, landscape architects and engineers to complete land development, master planning, and strategic planning projects.

• Prepare and deliver presentations to clients and government (approving agencies to advance approvals of development, Master Plans, Development Guidelines and policies).

• Liaise with government agencies and other authorities as may be required regarding development objectives, policies and procedures.

• Assisting project managers with the compliance of the company’s Quality Assurance policies and procedures.

• Prepare proposals and qualification documents in the interest of obtaining new assignments.

• Provide such further assistance to senior management as may be required from time to time.

• Provide effective representation for the organisation, developing and managing relationships with the client and other local authorities.

• Interprets and applies applicable government codes, ordinances and regulations.

• Initiates actions necessary to correct deficiencies or violations of regulations.

• Assists with updates and maintenance of Comprehensive Plan, transportation plan and land development regulations.

• Acts as a liaison between community groups, government agencies, developers and elected officials in developing neighborhood plans.

• Critically reviews and manages data and provides analytical assessment of findings.

• Conducts extensive research in specific or general project areas.

• Writes and presents formal and technical reports, working papers and correspondence.

• Identifies community problems, issues and opportunities in particular neighborhoods that could be mitigated through better community planning.

• Develops long range plans for communities with common developmental issues.

• Develops strategies to promote economic and community development, or efficient land use consistent with community goals.

• Evaluates adequacy of community facilities in meeting current and projected needs.

• Recommends priorities, schedules and funding sources to implement public improvements plan.

Specific Skills Required:

• Specific Language requirements

• Good working knowledge of FIDIC contracts or similar

• Specific systems or tools used – ETABS, SAFE etc.

• Specific industry and project experience – ports, rail, highways

• Requirements for driving licenses

• Mandatory Professional Certifications.

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum 15 years of experience in the Urban Planning field, he/she would ideally have worked on similar projects and successful candidate would lead a multi-disciplinary small team also.

Preferred Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Design, or Town Planning would be preferred.

• RTPI membership would be advantageous.
